IBM unveils new 1 Tera Byte tape drive

Friday, August 29th, 2008

IBM has unveiled a 1 terabyte tape drive capable of achieving a data transfer rate of 160 Megabytes per second. The drive supports data encryption and features a magneto-resistive head design that significantly reduces read errors for server enterprise environments.

According to IBM, tapes offer the “most green and cost-effective form of storage and will enable clients to address their growing needs for affordable and robust data solutions”.

The TS1130 will be available in September at a starting price of $39,050. µ Affordable how? who knows but i think i will go the SSD route thank you!

Hard Disk that is Fire and Water retardant

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

The harddisk named isSafe claim it is the first company to offer fire and waterproof harddisk. The harddisk is considered a brilliant component in a server envrionment or even family use for saving those important family pictures.

The harddisk comes in two sizes 2.5″ and 3.5″ enclosures. The hard disk itself can sustain temperatures of 1400 degree fahrenheit for up to 15 minutes. In water the hard disk is quaranteed for upto 24 hours in 5ft of water. The time limit will change depending on the depth of water the hard disk is within.

The hard disk are priced at £150 for 5400 rpm 80 GB models and £230 for a 7200 rpm 200 GB version. There is also a 320 GB 5400 rpm model for £225.

The 4870 is built with high-end GDDR5 memory something that Nvidia Lacks. The processing clock will run at 850 GPU and 1050 Mhz Memory clock. The slower card will spec at 650/850 Mhz.

They may be released in May, but don’t count on it!

VelociRaptor The latest Western Digital Hard Disk

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Western Digital created a drive capable of 10,000 RPM for fast data access. No other hard disk company has created an enthusiast hard disk at the same speed for the consumer market.

The VelociRaptor pictured above has twice the capacity of the older Rapter hard disk which currently have 150Gib. The new hard disk has shrunk to 2.5″ so how will the hardisk fit into the current 3.5″ drive bays? Well Western Digital have decided to enclose the hard disk within an IcePack. The Icepack shown in the picture has a built in heat sink to increase the size to the current standard drive bay dimension.

The Rapter drive still uses the 10,00 RPM but uses SATA II which increases the sata data transfer to 3 Gb/s. The drive also delivers 16Mb Cache Memory. As mentioned before the heat sink built into the drive will help tremendously to increase performance and help increase heat transfer . The drive has RAFF a new implementation to Western Digital products and a life expectancy of 1.4 million hours.
