Life Is greener with LG

Friday, August 29th, 2008

NTELLIGENT SENSOR TECHNOLOGY significantly reduces energy consumption within LG TV products according to independent testing results announced today.

TLG LCD TVs sensor technology dramatically reduce the of power consumed 70% less than their previous models. The technology works by analysing the amount of ambient light in a room and adjusting the TV’s settings accordingly in order to gain picture perfection. (Philips TV anyone?)

The marketing manager for digital display at LG explains that, “The intelligent sensor is one of the best results of our ongoing efforts to create eco-friendly products that offer the same or even better quality than conventional TV products.”

Nvidia Desktop Drivers

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Driver heaven has release some useful tool for the majority of Nvidia driven laptop owners. The software produced by driver heaven allows nvidia notebooks graphics processor owners to mod and utilise the up-to-date desktop drivers released bu Nvidia to run on their machines.
Drivers for their laptops can take time to filter from similar and other supported hardware parts used in desktop graphics cards.

S3 What happened?

Friday, August 29th, 2008

The S3 Chrome, S3 are claiming their Chrome 430 GT will out perform the current Nvidia and ATi counter parts. The board is priced at around $59 which seems to me as a bargin if current Nvidia and ATi cards are priced around $350. The card is directx 10.1 supported and includes third party features such as ChromotionHD which is S3’s video architecture for HD.

Ok with this said I have no updates for the vendor! I was hoping to hear something positive but with the months flying by Nvidia and ATi still lead the market. So as a update I dont see S3 as a threat to the main competition and I cant really see their products denting the market in any way. Lets keep an eye out on the ATI 4870 X2 and what benchmarks are out there!

Nvision 2008

Friday, August 29th, 2008

After the awards ceremony at Nvision 2008 after a number of medals and cheques were handed out the two guys from Myth Busters came to the stage. The Myth Busters gave a demonstration to illustrate a CPU and GPU with a Myth Buster twist.

First up was a small robot called Leonardo which was the “CPU” shot single paintballs out onto a canvas to create a simple smily face! :). The Big leo which was the GPU was in a different league all together. The CPU robot created an impressive BANG which shot numerous paintballs to make a pixelated version of the Mona Lisa, how artistic!

You can see the irony behind the hope show but you cant knock Nvidia for trying. The you tube video is bellow.

Nvidia Loosing the battle?

Friday, August 15th, 2008

Nvidia have yet again lost profits this year. This quarter Nvidia have lost $120 million dollars. Revenue was around $890 million compared to $950 million made within the last quarter of last year. As we are aware the previous losses were due to weak die and packing which resulted in $120.9 million in losses.

The main reason for this quarterly loss is on the basis of competition. AMD/ATI have been getting their act together creating good strong prices for the main stream markets. With the 4800 series of cards being released last month Customers are not going to nvidia!

Nvidia has blamed the desktop GPU division which saw revenues down by 25%. Nvidia sort of said this was due to the pricing of their products, REALLY! Any way, the combined sales of notebooks, professional and MCP create 27% of their market!

My theory is on the basis o venturing into other markets! Nvidia have recently created miniature processors for their mini laptop series. Did ATI/AMD do the same? Well no they concentrated on their markets and thats why their sales are far better!

ATI today who’s to tomorrow?

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

ATI have released their latest offering the 4870 X2 yes I said it right! The X2! I dont have arcitecture information and what parts have exactly changed but  I can give you access to the general specifications of the Graphics Card.

The 4870 X2 was released today proving better than any other graphics card on the market. I was expecting ATI to bring something to the table but I wasn’t quite sure what exactly! TO be honest it has come to a shock as how good the current benchmarks look for the new dual processor card.

Here it goes, The Graphics card uses 2Gb of GDDR5 memory! memory clock 3600Mhz and core with a clock speed of only 750Mhz so what happened to the clock speeds here? not exactly double by my calculations anyway! To Finish, the GPU does use 1600 cores.

The Graphics card is priced at around £400 becayse there isnt any competition because Nvidia’s offerings are what, last year?

AMD/ATi HD 470 X2

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

ATI partners have been jumping the gun, so to speak since their last generation graphics cards. So what are ATI partners doing now? Somehow the HD4870X2 is on pre-sale on a Austrian website selling the cards for under $400 which is $550 American dollars say around 275 before tax after tax £323, not to bad for a dual based card even though its hitting GTX 280 territory.

The official launch of the cards is 12th of August but as said previously the card can be snatched up at Austrian and German e-tailers. The specifications of graphics card is bellow.

Clock: 2X750Mhz
Memory: 2x 1024MB GDDR5, im sure its 2x 512?
Memory Clock: 900Mhz, should be higher for GDDR5
Stream processors: 2×800
Fabrication process: 55nm

Lets see how the benchmarks shape up!

Office Systems

Friday, July 18th, 2008

Within office environments computer systems take a vital role within any organisation. Virtual offices across the UK must consider what their idea requirements are. Normally office computers are basic with no intension to specifiy any special requirments. What happens when specialised company’s need faster performing computers for graphical based work. Below is system specifications tailored for Virtual offices.

Office Systems
Processor
basic processor consisting of budget components. usually sempron, celeron based processors.
Memory
Limited RAM is needed, 512Mb would suffice considering Windows Vista like mega bytes.
Hard Disk
Depending on the network architecture this could either consists of local memory of a few gigabytes with a NAS is used else 30 gigabyte disk would suffice.
I/O
Sound card is usually onboard along with the graphics display.

Web Servers
These systems are virtually the same, they use limited processing power but more specific servers will need high Cache memory levels and usually uses quad core based systems.

When specifying these requirments always consider the software used and what processing will be carried out by the system

Dells version of the Apple Mac Air notebook

Monday, June 30th, 2008

With Nvidia, ATI and Intel all competing for the mini notebook processor market. The Dell laptop named the DELL E comes in two surprising sizes the 8.9″ and 12.1″. The laptop is 0.8 inches thick! The laptop is set to be released in august/ september time.

The Laptop can run both Linux and Windows operating systems which is a positive note against the current Asus EEE PC range. For more interesting specifications check the table below!

Standard Version:

  • Display: 8.9W (1024 x 600) res
  • CPU: 1.6GHz Intel Diamondville? (Atom may be?)
  • 4/8 ans 16 gig flash memory, no solid state harddisk here
  • 3 usb ports
  • Wifi 11g
  • 5hr battery life

The laptop looks promising but by the time this is released I expect other manufacturers will have competitive versions supplying better specifications for the money.
